From conducting the band to ensuring that every band member is in good shape, senior Isha Jannu does it all to help the Emerson band succeed in every way possible. Jannu is one of the four drum majors that comprise the band’s leadership team. Through her exceptional leadership skills, the Maverick band has secured many achievements. Jannu’s drive for the position of drum major developed when she was able to observe the drum majors that mentored her.
“Throughout freshman year, I witnessed the leadership of the drum majors at Liberty,” Jannu said. “The confidence and maturity they display, and the compassion they show to every member of the band inspired me to help others in the same way.”
With being a drum major comes major responsibilities that should not get overlooked upon.
“During rehearsals, I assist people and give them suggestions on how they can improve their technique and musicianship,” Jannu said. “Additionally, I lead performances and maintain discipline during contests and marching rehearsals.”
Throughout the school year, many fun events are lined up for the band. However, competition season is the time of the year where individuals are constantly giving their best efforts.
“Competition season is my favorite time of the year because performing for a varied audience and judges who are going to place us with bands that are much more established, makes this time of the year exhilarating.” Jannu said. “We get to prove to the band community that we are a ‘force to be reckoned’ with and present how much we have grown in just three years.”
As the figurehead of the ensemble, drum majors occasionally encounter obstacles that eventually pave the way for them to become even better role models to their classmates.
“Maintaining my friendship and compassion for my peers while ensuring strict discipline can be difficult,” Jannu said. “In addition, maintaining a level of leadership in every environment and being held to a high standard can result in a lot of pressure. However, these obstacles become good learning opportunities to carry onto all aspects of my life.”
After graduation, college is the next step in Jannu’s life where she aims to proceed with her fondness towards music.
“I plan to go to college and get a technology related degree but I will definitely continue to pursue my interest in music, though it will be more of a leisure activity. “
