The Percy Jackson series grew to be a cultural phenomenon in the 2010s, cementing itself as an iconic story at the hearts of many. With the new show adaptation of the book series coming out soon, the trailer has Emerson students reminiscing on the impact of the books in their own childhood.
The Percy Jackson series follows the story of Percy, the son of Poseidon, the god of the sea in Greek mythology, as he goes on several adventures along with his friends from Camp Half Blood.
“The series really got me interested in reading more because the story was so magical and immersive,” Senior Sri Manasi Katuri said.
The Greek mythology aspect of the show is a common theme in most of Riordan’s popular books. His spin off series even focus on Roman and Egyptian mythology .
“These books really got me interested in Greek mythology and folklore specifically,” Katuri said. “Percy Jackson also helped me connect with my own culture as well because I began to draw parallels between Hindu mythology and Greek mythology as I was reading the books.”
The show will be coming out in December and a trailer was recently released with the hit song “Riptide” by Vance Joy playing in the background. The song is also a reference to Percy Jackson’s sword, named Riptide.
“I think the song choice was very intentional and a way to tap into the nostalgia of our generation,” Katuri said. “We grew up with that song and seeing a book series that we were all obsessed with come to life with “Riptide” in the background will be amazing to watch.”
The passionate fandom behind the show still persists strongly years after the release of the books. With the new show’s marketing tapping into this Gen Z nostalgia, it’s sure to be an exciting premiere for all who grew up obsessing over the adventures at Camp Half Blood.
