Beneath the stadium lights on the football field lies the Emerson Majestics’ first lieutenant, Sydney Cox, as she gracefully executes her dance routines. Through her remarkable leadership skills, the Majestics have obtained many accomplishments, like gaining the title of ‘grand champion’ at the Lebanon Trail Crowd Pleasers Competition.
Cox’s fondness for football and the scope of opportunities present at Emerson influenced her to become a member of the Majestics.
“I love football,” Cox said. “It is my favorite sport to watch and attend, and I always loved seeing the drill team perform on the field when I was a freshman at Independence. Since Emerson was a new school, students had more opportunities so I decided to try out for the drill team. It was one of the best decisions I have made.”
As first lieutenant, Cox carries a lot of weight on her shoulders to enforce success upon her teammates.
“My responsibilities include learning the dances as well as choreographing them,” Cox said. “I make sure each person arrives to practice prepared and in shape. I also instruct the team and make decisions relevant to the entire group.”
Aside from her leadership position on the drill team, Cox serves as a mentor to her teammates in order to uplift them during times of despair.
“I always make sure to display a heartening and positive attitude,” Cox said. “I improve my teammates whenever they are slacking on their dance routine or lacking confidence in their ability to do well. My main motto that I tell everyone is that you have the capability to reach your full potential as long as you keep trying and working towards your goals.”
Cox will be attending the University of Oklahoma in the fall to study sports business.
“I chose this major to resume my love for football and sports,” Cox said. “I hope to one day work for a professional football team.”
As Cox nears the end of her last year of being on the drill team, she recalls her favorite moments.
“My most treasured memory would be our first football game,” Cox said. “Being able to perform as the first drill team of Emerson was very fulfilling. Considering that we were new to performing in front of a huge crowd, my team and I learned to rely on each other and end the game as a ‘family.'”
