Every year hundreds of future healthcare professionals submit their applications for Frisco ISD’s Clinical programs. These dual credit courses, including Health Science Clinical, Rehabilitation Aide and Pharmacy Technician, offer priceless hands-on experience for those wanting to pursue a career in the medical field.
At Emerson, many students who have taken the required prerequisite courses and submitted a stellar application are chosen for their desired programs. These students share their experiences with the programs and advice on how to apply.
“I highly recommend anyone interested in healthcare to apply to the Rehabilitation Aide program,” Junior Karina Hirai said. “You learn so much more than physical therapy and it being a Collin class gives it a new dynamic than classes I’ve taken before.”
All of FISD’s clinical programs allow students to complete the class with a certification that they can use to work in the real world.
“From the Health Science Clinical class you can get your Nurses Aid and Clinical Medical Assistant certification,” Junior Gayatri Pappu said. “With the CNA certification, you are able to work in a nursing home and help residents with activities of daily living. A CCMA certification allows you to work at doctor’s offices helping patients schedule their appointments and helping them manage their medical records.”
The Rehabilitation Aide program also offers a certification to students.
“You take a Rehab Aide Certification at the end of the year to be officially certified, though from my understanding it isn’t required and we do clinicals without them,” Hirai said.
One of the most popular clinical programs, Health Science Clinical (CNA), takes students to work at different clinical settings including nursing homes and hospitals.
“During the first semester CNA is nursing focused as clinicals are done at a nursing home,” Junior Laya Ganta said. “But during the second semester, we go to hospitals where you are exposed to all kinds of medical professions.”
To help students who are currently applying to FISD’s clinical programs, a current CNA student gives her advice.
“Emphasize your passions for healthcare, showcase relevant experiences, and highlight your academic achievements in your application,” Pappu said. “Ensure that your personal statement reflects your commitment to patient care.”
Regardless of what program students apply to, they are likely to gain valuable experience that will help them throughout their lifetime.
“I’m not only very happy but very grateful for the opportunity to become a rehab aid,” Hirai said. “This has been one of the most rewarding programs I’ve been a part of and I’m forever grateful for the things I’ve learned and the people I’ve met.”
