Emerson High School Broadcast and Newspaper students competed at the third annual Frisco ISD broadcast competition, which was held at the FISD Career and Technical Education Center and took place from January 23-24. Multiple students earned awards and accolades over the two-day competition. The team was comprised of Isabelle Smith (12), Chloe Ro (12), Austin Lee (12), Pakhee Verma (11), Bryce Holland (9), and Chase Rodenhaver (9).
“It was so tough but really rewarding,” Senior Chloe Ro said. “Everything went super fast so there wasn’t much time to really do anything but work.”
Submissions included five pre-submission categories and an on-site competition. The competition gave students six and a half hours to create stories and highlight reels, including an anchor read competition, and a press conference with Frisco ISD students and coaches.
“The press conference was so cool to be a part of,” Freshman Bryce Holland said. “It felt so professional and showed me what things like that were really like.”
The second day of the competition included speaker sessions from acclaimed DFW Journalists such as Sports Reporter for FOX4 News Samantha Gannon, Radio Analyst and Play-by-Play Reporter for the Dallas Stars Bruce LeVine, and Photojournalist for WFAA Justin Fuller.
“It was really amazing to hear from all of these speakers. It really showed me what the industry can look like,” Holland said. “One of my favorite sessions was from Bruce Levine. He reports for sports, which is what I want to do, so his session really helped me.”
The judging lasted throughout the second day, with the judges composed of media professionals representing organizations such as FOX4, WFAA, The Ticket, KISS F.M., and multiple DFW area universities.
The Charge student news site brought home third place in Online Publication, Together Chloe Ro and Isabelle Smith earned second place in Onsite Multimedia Publication, with Smith additionally earning second place for Onsite Anchor Reads.
“I was stunned. I really didn’t expect to win anything,” Ro said. “I sat there for a second when I realized we had placed. Our program is so new so this really was a nice surprise, and it was amazing for our hard work to be recognized.”
