On February 26, February 27 and March 4, the Emerson High School Orchestras performed in the University Interscholastic League (UIL) at Independence High School resulting in most groups winning Sweepstakes, the highest rating possible, for their musical performances.
Students from each orchestra share their experience performing for a panel of judges and their thoughts about their overall performance.
“I feel that our orchestra did well at UIL. We did good at sight reading and although there were some parts in our stage performance that we could have done better, overall it was a good effort,” Chamber Orchestra member Junior Saimanasaa Viswanathan said. “We ended up getting Sweepstakes which is the highest rating!”
The Symphonic Orchestra performed on February 27 as a non-varsity group and also won Sweepstakes for their outstanding performance.
I felt very proud of my Orchestra’s accomplishments at UIL this year,” Symphonic Orchestra member Junior Chloe Lee said. “I personally felt that I delivered a great performance and I was happy that I contributed positively to my group.”
The first group from Emerson to perform at UIL this year, the Philharmonic Orchestra performed on February 26.
“I feel like my orchestra’s hard work over the past few months really paid off on stage,” Philharmonic Orchestra member senior Shriya Kesharaju Venkata said. “Even though we felt our performance wasn’t the best on stage we managed to pull it together with sight reading and scored Sweepstakes on our overall performance.”
Lastly, the Sinfonia Orchestra received an overall rating of 2 out of 5 (1 being the highest possible) on their rehearsed performance and 1 out of 5 on their sight reading performance.
“We worked really hard towards UIL and I think we did the best we could,” Sinfonia Orchestra member Junior Ashwika Rajanikanth said. “I’m happy with the results because it shows what we are capable of.”
All Orchestras put on an amazing performance at UIL this year and they plan to improve their skills to shine even brighter in the coming years.
