On May 4, Mavericks concluded Wish Week by participating in the Make-A-Wish Color Run, which was preceded by the Powder Puff Football Game on May 3. Both events were a fundraiser for Zaki, Emerson’s Make-A-Wish recipient, and with everyone’s effort Emerson raised over $14,000 for him.
Emerson’s student council was in charge of planning all the fundraising events, which concluded with the Color Run and Powder Puff football game.
“We’ve been wanting to be a part of Wish Week since the beginning of the year,” said junior President Chloe Jung. “We wanted an event that was community-based, showing our students could come together in order to achieve a common goal, which was raising money for Zaki.”
Not only were the events meant for a great cause, but they were also extremely enjoyable for those organizing and participating in them.
“Being a part of leadership, I think seeing participants genuinely enjoy the events we create is the most exciting part. Seeing so many people having fun and cheering each other on during the color run on Saturday meant a lot for me”, said senior Student Council President Steven Jin.
Junior Vyom Manot also had a similar opinion.
“I really liked the Color Run,” said Manot. “It was a lot of fun doing all the activities like drawing on the ground with Zaki, the run itself, playing the games on the field, and most importantly seeing Zaki having fun himself.”
The Color Run was an all-round success for both parties, and it wasn’t the only event to celebrate. During the Powder Puff Football game, all-girls football teams of juniors played seniors while all the boys cheered for them on the sidelines. The event was a humorous play on modern football.
“It was really funny seeing the tables turned during football, but it was extremely fun for both parties,” said Junior Ayaan Shaik. “I was cheering on the sidelines while the girls on my team were playing.”
The collective effort from both the participants and the organizers provided Zaki an enjoyable experience and an opportunity to visit Disneyland with the money raised. Congratulations to Maverick Leadership for an incredible Make-A-Wish campaign, and thank you to all the students, staff, and community members who contributed to its success.
