Maverick Leadership hosted the very first pep rally of the school year on Aug. 22, featuring performances from the Majestics, band, color guard, cheerleaders, and band. Flag runners welcomed the football, volleyball, tennis and cross country teams. Football captains Christian Lyons, 12; Kelton Wafer, 12; Nate Leal, 12; and Agape Lawrence, 12 hyped the crowd in anticipation of tonight’s football game, and “Echoes of Atlantis” was announced as the 2024 homecoming dance theme. Representative of the Make-a-Wish Foundation, Murphey Spears, made a special announcement regarding last year’s fundraiser: Emerson High School is the designated “Rookie of the Year” of 2024 and Addisyn Wimberly, 11, was honored with an “Above and Beyond” special recognition for personal servant leadership and her incredible effort toward Make-a-Wish. The pep rally ended with the Emerson fight song and a reminder to support the varsity football team at their first game tonight at the Star. Students are encouraged to wear Hawaiian-themed clothing to show support.

Ardyn Lessner, The Charge Associate Editor-in-Chief
Ardyn Lessner is a junior and serves as the Assistant Editor-in-Chief for her second year in newspaper. She’s looking forward to contributing new ideas and having a leadership position in The Charge. She’s a dancer for the Majestics and loves practicing aerial circus on the side, as well as serving as a kids’ aerial instructor at Altitude Fitness. Ardyn is considering interior design or writing as a possible career, but knows she definitely wants to move out of Texas.

Giulia Tolar, Adviser
Giulia Tolar is the Audio/Video Production, Journalism, Newspaper, and Photojournalism teacher at Emerson High School. She is in her sixth year of teaching and third year as a Maverick. She holds her B.S. in Elementary Education from Grove City College, her M.S. in Educational Psychology from the University of North Texas, and she is pursuing her graduate certificate as an Educational Diagnostician from Dallas Baptist University.
She has taught fourth grade ELA and Social Studies, sixth grade World Cultures, and eighth grade US History prior to her time at Emerson. Some of her favorite hobbies are reading on her Kindle, baking, and spending time with friends and family. She also loves to travel with her husband! Together, they own and operate a wedding videography business and a photography business.
As Adviser for Unbranded Media, Giulia works to facilitate a team of student leaders to archive and broadcast the accomplishments and memories of Emerson Mavericks.

Yena Nam, The Charge Editor-in-Chief
Yena Nam is a senior at Emerson High School and serves as the Editor-in-Chief for The Charge. This is her third year in Newspaper, and she looks forward to projecting new ideas and bringing out the best in the team. You can find her working in the newspaper classroom almost every day of the week, but other than that, she loves to spend time with her friends, watch movies with her family, and make five different online versions of her schedule. After high school, she plans to dig deeper into her interests in community service, design, and child welfare.
