Football season is here. The varsity football team had their first game of the season on Aug. 29 against Mckinney High School. The Mavericks pulled a win and the final score was 17-7.
The first half of the game started out strong. Wide receiver Blake McLane, 11, scored the first touchdown thanks to a pass from DJ Shelton, 12, and kicker John Pacheco, 11, scored a field goal. Kameron Lockhart, 12, made the second touchdown, but was injured near the end of the second quarter. Despite the injury, the team pushed harder than ever and won the game.
Not only was it the first football game of the season, it was also senior night. Emerson honored all of the fine art seniors including band, color guard, choir, and Majestics by allowing them to walk across the field as their names were called out. To finish out halftime, the Majestics performed their routine, “Get Ready,” and their kick routine to “Timber,” played by the band.
Following up a strong start to the season, the team is determined to make this year once another year to remember with each coming game. They hope to make the playoffs again, determined to overcome their crushing defeat in the fifth round last season.
Kicker John Pacheco, 11, said, “Although there might be some tough games we will still come out on top and win.”
