With an ambitious new ‘Echoes of Atlantis’ theme, the homecoming dance is ensured to be a party to remember. Floating sea creatures, underwater treasures, and atmospheric blue lighting will transform the school cafeteria into the lost city of Atlantis, immersing students into an unforgettable experience where they become the citizens of a mythical underwater world.
This event is only possible because of the hardworking Maverick Leadership team working behind the scenes. Planning such a large event is no cake walk, and it takes a lot of dedication, creativity, collaboration, and coordination to bring the vision to life.
“The most exciting part of planning homecoming is being able to come together as people that represent leadership at our school and combining our ideas together to make something memorable,” Co-Student Body President, Jihan Kapur, 12, said. “This dance has only been made possible because of the creativity and intuitiveness of the team working together.”
This year’s theme will be a deliberate departure from the usual.
“We’ve done very similar ‘city-life’ themes for the past few years, and we wanted to try something different that would stand out,” Co-Student Body President Chaavi Rohit, 12, said. “We didn’t want another ‘Disney’ vibe. We wanted an ancient, romantic, mature atmosphere to set this homecoming apart from our previous dances.”
Planning such a grand-scale event is never without its challenges. For the event planners, the biggest obstacle has been discovering an efficient way to balance all of the ideas from different teams of people.
“Organizing has been the most difficult part,” said Rohit. “There is a lot of coordination that has to go on to make sure we’re all on the same page.” Despite these challenges, the event planners have pulled through and have managed to put together the best combination of ideas for a successful homecoming.
Felicia Khusyonny, an event organizer and Sophomore co-president, has found the planning experience to be a fruitful opportunity in learning how to be a good leader.
“Since planning this event, I feel like I’ve learned how to better fit into this ‘leadership’ role,” Khusyonny said. “I have a stronger voice; Commanding people on what to do instead of sticking to the sidelines like I normally would. Assertiveness is a skill I’ve been meaning to learn, and Hoco planning has definitely helped me learn a lot.”
The year’s chosen homecoming theme, ‘Echoes of Atlantis,’ promises to immerse students as if they were truly stepping foot into the lost city.
“You literally feel like you’re underwater. The event will be set under blue lights and tapestries with ocean creatures hanging overhead,” said Kapur. “It’s a really cool environment that I’m excited to share with everyone.”
This homecoming experience has only been made possible through the dedicated work of the leadership team and student volunteers.
“We all worked really hard on getting these decorations finalized, and I hope everyone who attends the party can appreciate what we’ve done,” said Khusyonny.
