Boba Bros is a popular Vietnamese style boba shop in McKinney that sells a wide variety of bubble drinks. After receiving a few recommendations from friends, I decided to give it a try.
From the outside, the shop didn’t look like anything special. Upon walking in, however, it immediately felt cozy. At 12:30 p.m. on a Saturday, the shop was nearly empty with only one employee behind the counter. The song ‘Night Changes’ by One Direction was playing, and the lights were dimmed, providing a welcome contrast to the bright sunlight outside. The interior had an earth toned, rustic style to it that contributed to the atmosphere. A well-kept seating area consisting of high black metal tables with stools and lower wooden tables with cushioned chairs was featured at the front of the shop. Overall, the aesthetic of the shop stood out from the other boba shops I’ve been to in the area.
Despite being a Vietnamese boba shop, Boba Bros has a similar menu to what might be seen at other boba places around town. Their only distinctly Vietnamese drink on the menu is their Cafe Trung, a Vietnamese style of coffee. When it comes to their menu, Boba Bros only provides several options for coffee, but tea and smoothies each feature multiple choices. Tea is split into two categories: milk tea and green tea with at least eight options each. Smoothie options include some general fruit flavors as well as other flavors such as honeydew, jackfruit and taro. The toppings for these drinks are primarily types of boba such as regular, crystal and popping as well as different flavors of jelly. Interestingly, Boba Bros also has a small dessert and snack menu that contains a diversity of food from egg rolls to onion rings. These snacks felt a little out of place for a boba shop, however, it did add a nice touch and allowed customers to satisfy their hunger with a little more substance.
I ordered a mango smoothie with regular tapioca boba for a total cost of $6.93. I had to wait a few minutes to get my drink due to the fact that the mango had to be freshly blended and the boba needed to finish being made. It was definitely worth the slight wait, however, because the drink was smooth and the boba was still warm. The cups that the boba came in were functional, since the lid featured a circle shaped perfectly for the straw, preventing the drink from spilling. The drink itself was delicious, but a little sweet. Seeing as it was a smoothie, though, sweetness is generally to be expected. Additionally, the boba was a little chewier than I would have liked, however, this did not detract from the quality of the drink, and I always have the option of getting popping boba next time.
On the day that I visited, Boba Bros was celebrating one year of being open. As a little treat to their customers, the first 10 customers of the day were able to pick out a keychain from a tall container full of boba plushies. This was a unique way to celebrate and added a little fun for the customers.
Overall, I thought the boba shop felt inviting with its dimmed lighting and calming music. If visited during a less busy time of the day, it could serve as a nice study spot. While I have only tried one drink on their menu so far, I was very impressed. Everything was made fresh after I placed my order, which added to the quality. The drink was very tasty, and I would love to go back to try out more flavors. I would definitely recommend giving Boba Bros a try!
