On Thursday, Sept. 26, past, present and future Maverick families and friends came together for the fourth annual community pep rally, an evening of food, games and football. A performance from the band and colorguard kicked off the night with music and dancing while the Majestics, cheerleaders and football team delivered a stellar performance. The pep rally was pre-emptive of the freshman football game at 6:00 p.m., the homecoming pep rally and varsity football game on Sept. 27 and the homecoming dance on Sept. 28.
The pep rally began with future Mavericks from Comstock Elementary, Ogle Elementary, Elliott Elementary, Wortham Middle School, and Scoggins Middle School running through the Maverick Tunnel, followed by the recognition of those from Emerson feeder schools who exemplify ‘Bold,’ ‘First’ and ‘Curious’ qualities:
Then, the homecoming court walked the field with their families and teachers. Homecoming king and queen will be announced prior to the varsity football game on Friday night.
Performances from the band, colorguard, Majestics, and cheer followed. The Majestics also performed with the Mini Majestics, young dancers who will someday attend Emerson and be Mavericks themselves.
“It felt good seeing the little ones dance and be mentored by the older Majestics because they’ll get to lead EHS someday and our school will be in good hands,” sophomore defensive tackle Camilo Sanchez said.
Following the pep rally was the freshman football game against Memorial, which the Mavericks won 26-6.
“The whole team came out with energy. We were all super hype,” said freshman wide receiver Jadien Craig. “Usually during games, a lot of people come to support, but not as many people as last night. Since it was homecoming week, a lot of people came to support.”
After the pep rally, organizations set up booths with various games and activities to entertain families.
“My favorite booth was the rock painting booth,” senior Tanisi Kumar said. “I had a great time doing that activity.”
Winning the entertaining games often did not come without a prize.
“I got a lot of stickers at the community pep rally and I used them to decorate my laptop,” senior Arielle Li said.
Last but not least, the variety of food trucks and stands allowed Mavericks to stay cool and satiated throughout the warm evening.
“The energy drinks from Black Rock Coffee Bar were great,” senior Tanisi Kumar said. “They had a ton of different flavors. I tried the red cherry, and peach flavors and they were all really good.”
This exciting event leading up to homecoming weekend was surely a night to remember for past, present and future Mavericks.
“The event was super fun,” Kumar said. Everyone was super energetic and there was so much to see.”
Cheer on the varsity football team tonight at Toyota Stadium against Memorial High School and come dance the night away at the homecoming dance tomorrow night.
