Each year, the start of fall marks a change in drinks desserts away from tropical flavors and towards those more associated with the colder months. To get into the fall spirit, I made a trip to House of Bread to check out some of their new seasonal flavors.
After a few minutes of roaming around the bakery, I finally settled on House of Bread’s Apple Blossom. It was very tasty and contained a complementary mixture of flavors and textures. The Apple Blossom had a crunchy pastry outer shell with soft and warm apples in the center. It featured a hint of cinnamon throughout and was decorated by a dusting of powdered sugar on top. Overall, I thought it was very good. It wasn’t too sweet. The hard shell and soft apples provided a nice contrast and the apple cinnamon flavors blended well together.
Flavors such as apple cinnamon and pumpkin spice are largely accepted by society as fall themed, but there is actually a specific reason for this. During the summer, people tend to eat more refreshing foods. For example, people often eat watermelon during the summer because watermelon has a naturally cooling effect on the body that provides a much needed relief from the heat. When cooler weather comes, however, people no longer seek something refreshing. That’s when society experiences a shift towards flavors that have a warming effect on the body. Cinnamon, in particular, has this effect, and that’s why it is recognized as a fall flavor.
For those who aren’t a fan of fall flavors, however, House of Bread has a wide variety of options. Their bakery offers different loaves of bread, muffins and pastries. House of Bread also has a breakfast and lunch menu consisting mainly of sandwiches served with different types of bread, but there are a few options for soups and salads.
House of Bread itself had a very welcoming atmosphere. The bakery is comfortably lit by a wall of windows and strings of overhead lights. Bakery items are displayed against every wall in the store as well as on additional tables placed throughout the center of the store. This arrangement means that there is so much for customers to look at and so many items to choose from. One is likely to spend at least a few minutes trying to make a decision.
Overall, I thought the Apple Blossom was delicious! For anyone craving a fall themed dessert or any baked goods in general, I would definitely recommend trying House of Bread. There are so many options to choose from, that a person is likely to find something that suits their preferences.
