For seniors whose high school careers are nearing their end, prom is an exciting event that many students will remember for the rest of their lives. In the weeks leading up to prom, students went through a series of voting to determine this year’s prom queen. As a result student’s votes, Sofia Wachholz was crowned the Emerson High School prom queen of 2025.
Waccholz was one of the three senior girls nominated, however, the king and queen were not announced until the actual dance. Prom is already a thrilling part of senior year, but for nominees, it meant extra anticipation leading up to the big event.
“For Homecoming Queen…I did campaign a little bit and post on Instagram during the nominations, but this time around, I didn’t,” Wachholz said. “So I didn’t expect to be [prom queen], but I was really happy when I found out I got it.”
Wachholz is highly involved in multiple different aspects of school. She is a four-year officer in DECA and a senior class delegate in Maverick Leadership. On top of this, she competes in both varsity track and field as well as varsity cheer.
“My favorite thing about Emerson is probably all the events we do as a community,” Waccholz said. “Emerson is very interconnected across all of our programs and all of our students, and I really value that.”
Throughout her involvement in these programs, she has gotten to know many of her peers, learned new skills and made great memories.
“I really liked cheering at the Senior Night football game as a senior this year because we beat Melissa,” Waccholz said. “It was really surreal to be at that game.”
With her senior year nearing its end, however, she looks forward to her life after Emerson. She plans to attend University of Texas at Austin to study public relations and business. After high school, her goal is to work for a fashion company as a public relations specialist.
“Getting into college has been my biggest accomplishment in high school,” Wachholz said. “When I got in, it felt like everything I had worked for was worth it.”
Her dedication throughout high school shows itself in many ways. Being prom queen is much more than just a title. For Waccholz, it is a symbol of her hard work, her compassion and her involvement here at Emerson.
“I was excited because I knew it was from my peers, and it was a vote,” Wachholz said. “It means that my peers put trust in me to represent our school, and I’m happy that I can be one of those people.”
