On April 18 and 19, high school track athletes from various high schools competed at the UIL regional track meet at Maverick Stadium in the University of Texas at Arlington. Three students from Emerson–Caitlyn Johnson, 12, Jayson Williams, 12 and Corinne Purnell, 11–have qualified for the state meet, which will take place on May 2 at the University of Texas at Austin.
As they look ahead to the state track and field meet, these athletes have been maintaining a competitive mindset and partaking in rigorous training for preparation.
“I have been lifting weights and eating healthy,” Johnson said. “However, I have also been journaling and praying to reduce anxiety and ward off any distractions.”
In particular, qualification for the state meet is significantly rewarding to Williams, as he experienced setbacks during his junior year.
“I got injured my junior year and it was a rough time for me because I had to gain everything back and work harder,” Williams said. “I was already behind, but I am thankful and take pride in the fact that I was able to overcome this obstacle.”
Like many other athletes, Johnson shares a number of her habits and rituals that she executes to ensure success.
“I keep my hair out of my face, I don’t wear any jewelry and makeup and I eat pasta the night before because it is high in carbs,” Johnson said.
For young athletes, parents’ support plays a significant role in their athletic careers, providing encouragement and elevating their spirits.
“My dad and my family are my biggest supporters,” Williams said. “They have been with me when I got injured and continue to do so every step of the way.”
