Michael Herman is leaving a lasting impression on his debate students. He is a seasoned teacher with multiple years of debate instruction under his belt. He first started teaching 34 years ago. He graduated from Brooklyn College and majored in history with a minor in secondary education. He obtained his Masters degree in literacy from Adelphi University in Garden City, New York.
Herman desires for his students to apply what they have learned to their adult lives. He wants to make a lasting impression on his students and help them find their voice. Herman values the students developing their debate skills for future use as career professionals. He is witty in class, and always offers his strong opinion on debate issues when asked by students. This makes him unique and allows students to connect with him.
Herman said, “I try to connect more with my students and help them realize that what they do here in my classroom applies to their real life.”
The debate classroom is a place where students can learn to speak up and stand for certain viewpoints and ideas. High expectations are always important, and Herman displays his high expectations daily. He encourages peer assessment in his classroom and wants students to learn and grow from each other. The students in his classroom enjoy this type of self-reflection and analysis.
Herman said, “I have high expectations for my students. I guide them along the way, but I want them to figure out things on their own.”
Educators go into the teaching field for various reasons. Herman wants his students to feel confident and proud when they finish his course. His love of the classroom is evident among the students. They trust him and look up to him. Herman’s desire to help his students gain debate skills is evident as he has dedicated his life to training and equipping students.
Herman said, “Seeing that moment when their eyes light up and they say – I got it. Seeing the student who struggled all year finally grasp the concept is what it’s all about. That is why I went into teaching.”
Teachers have other passions and interests. Herman extends his love of literacy beyond the classroom walls. When he is not in the classroom teaching students, Herman can be found reading books and watching movies. He loves movies so much that he even helped create courses about the history of film. One of his favorite books is called “Dance of the Legislation” by Eric Redman. He also enjoys science fiction books. His passion for reading and literacy fuels his desire to be a lifelong learner.
Many people have quotes they live by. Quotes can lead a person to stay inspired and draw purpose in their life. When asked what his favorite quote is, Herman said, “Life is a highway!” He knows life is a journey and we have to be open to new experiences along the way.
“Life is something to be experienced!,” Herman said.
Herman has for living with purpose and choosing to follow your own path. He demonstrates this daily in the walls of Emerson High School. He is leading the way for students to gain passion and love of debate. He is inspiring the next generation to step up, embrace their life journey, and gain their voice. There is no greater calling in this world than to inspire youth and encourage free speech.
