A new Starbucks opened up on the corner of Stacy Road and Collin McKinney Parkway on Aug. 11.
Construction began in October 2024, as part of a plan for 17,000 new stores to open by 2030, most of them international. Although this location is one of many, the estimated construction cost was $1.1 million, adding to the company’s value of $101.75 billion.
The new location is already gaining traction, especially being located close to Emerson. For many students it’s a convenient stop before or after school.
“I think [the new location is] a great addition to the school because it’s so much closer, and everyone loves Starbucks,” Jacqueline Ramirez, 12, said. “I like how close it is and how accessible it is, because a while ago the closest Starbucks was five minutes away, so now it’s just right there. If we’re in a rush to get to school but we also need something to eat … you can just get something from Starbucks and then come immediately.”
Even Emerson Cheer was present at the grand opening, getting to enjoy complimentary drinks, some of the first ones ever made at the store.
“I just thought it was cool that we got to be a part of something more [community-oriented] because last season we didn’t do a bunch that was community based … This was cool because a bunch of people from city hall were there and we saw the ribbon cutting,” Layne Harris, 11, said. The team was able to meet officials from City Hall and cheer at the ribbon cutting ceremony, marking the opening of the new location.
However, Principal Kristin Sommers expressed concerns regarding students’ attendance and timeliness.
“I definitely think it will cause some [tardies], but that’s when everyone needs to prioritize and make sure they’re making the decision of what’s best for them, regarding Starbucks and being on time for school,” Sommers said.
If students take responsibility by planning ahead and making sure they have enough time to stop without being late, the new location will continue to be a source of enjoyment. The new Starbucks offers students easier access to delicious pumpkin spice lattes or baked apple croissants. It’ll be a spot for students to catch up on the latest gossip or study over cups of coffee. Whether drive-through or dine-in, Starbucks continues to dominate the beverage industry and brighten people’s days.
