On Friday, Aug. 29, the Emerson High School Varsity Football team will go against McKinney High at McKinney High School Stadium at 7:00 p.m. for the first football game of the season.
The first game isn’t just the start of the season; it’s a chance to build up the team’s courage, confidence and drive that will carry them to the playoffs. Alongside their athletic abilities and dedicated coaches, students’ morale plays a significant role in fueling the team’s performance on the field. With Maddox Molstad, 11, stepping in as the team’s new quarterback, Emerson students look forward to seeing how he’ll lead the team.
“It’s definitely helpful knowing that people are there and cheering you on. Having that excitement definitely helps,” Molstad said.
Molstad and the rest of the team are determined to channel the crowd’s excitement into touchdowns. From the sidelines of the field, just as much dedication is shown by the team trainers. Student Athletic Trainer Grace Loney, 12, plays a big part in making sure all the team’s safety is taken care of while also supporting the players throughout the game.
“My biggest task is definitely being ready for anything. Injuries can happen so fast, and in so many ways, that you have to be able to help fast,” Loney said. “I feel like I support the team by not only being someone they can go to for minor injuries but also someone they trust as a peer.”
Away from the stadium and back home, the team is adjusting to new leadership. This year, Emerson welcomes Coach William Ellis, whose charisma and guidance are already making an impact beyond the athletic hall.
This is only the first game of a long and climactic season. Next week, the Emerson Football Team will take on Frisco Reedy High School at Ford Stadium (The Star).
“Come out and support!” Molstad said.
