This year, many students have had to adapt to the phone ban. This ban has affected clubs and organizations that used to utilize social media and phones as a main source for communication and promotion. Maverick Leadership’s social media was a huge hit last year, with many of their videos reaching thousands of viewers. Without phones, social media officers had to find creative ways to document events.
One way the officers have kept up Maverick Leadership’s social media presence is by utilizing iPads for the classes, so they can film high-quality videos but still follow the rules. The two officers have been doing all that they can during this time. This was a stressful and unexpected change, but Maverick Leadership has continued to stay active with a consistent posting schedule and has branched out to new ideas. Through collaboration with the Leadership and PALs teacher, Erin Livingston, the leadership officers have perfected their posting routine.
“It’s definitely been difficult the first week or two. We didn’t have anything to take footage, but then we finally got iPads. But they’re not connected to our emails, we have to upload them to our drive, and if you forget, you could lose access; it’s way more tedious.” said Aidyn Guernsey, 12.
The workload differs now without cellphones.
¨We’ve had to do a lot of editing and posting at home; we can’t do it in school. We have a lot more work outside of school this year,¨ Guernsey said.
Collaboration is one of the key factors that both officers claimed as useful.
¨We have to communicate a lot, we have a to-do list, and we delegate tasks that way. Sometimes [Bennett Webster, 12] will post graphics, and I will be doing the videos; sometimes I’ll be recording, and she will be editing it. It really depends,¨ Guernesey said.
This new law caused lots of controversy, and it was a major shock once it was released. When running for positions last year, the phone law was not out yet.
¨It was a huge shock when they announced that this law was in place, and I wondered how we were going to do this, but Coach Livy reassured us that things were still going to happen,¨ Guernsey said.
Overall, Guernsey and Webster have been hard at work finding solutions to the obstacles leadership has faced this year. Their work does not go unnoticed, and according to the views and likes ratio, the hard work is paying off.
