Being one of the most anticipated pep rallies, Maverick Leadership has a lot of pressure to grow and create new ideas for Pink Out. T-shirts are made, the whole week has a name and dress-up days, a Pep Rally occurs and the school is decorated, but the root of this all is the awareness Pink Out brings. Pink Out is meant to honor all women who have been affected by Breast Cancer. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In their classes these past weeks, the Pep Rally Committee has been working on posters, game prep and decor for the gym and the quad.
Senior Swap occurred during the pep rally, the tradition where the Majestics and the cheerleaders swap and perform the opposite sport. After the Senior Swap, the clash of classes started with their game. Representatives from each class and teachers all played a relay race.
After the game, Teacher of the Year nominees stood up and were crowned by Majestics. Following the crowning, Leadership took a chance with swag surfing, where everyone swayed to the song. After this, Dr. Kristen Sommers was given recognition for Principal Appreciation Month.
Pep rallies are filled with multiple events, and in order to make sure they run smoothly, a lot of that responsibility falls to Erin Livingston, leadership teacher and Co Directors of Pep and Spirit , Webster,11 and Cameron Johnson,11. A big priority and something that often gets forgotten is staying true to the meaning and the real reason behind celebrating Pink Out. This was a priority with the Pep rally committee.
“We blast the gym with pink.We hope that when people think of pink they can trace it back to breast cancer awareness, just that mental coordination, and also just a big initiative to get people to reach out and maybe let someone know who has breast cancer that they are not alone and there is someone here for them,” Webster said.
The pep rally was a huge success, and with some mishaps, like not having enough volunteers for the games, the music messing up and the miscommunication between players, both leaders managed to keep their heads high and keep up the school spirit.
“If it happens, it happens. All you can do is keep moving forward, so when things go wrong, we would just smile and get loud and get hyped. That’s all you can do, ” Webster said.
The pep rally was packed with events and memorable moments for everyone to cherish. ¨The participation was a highlight, the swag surf and the hype were really good, I feel like this one showed a lot of growth, and this also highlighted to the students what they need to improve on,” Johnson said.
A new addition to the pep rallies has been the scoreboard, keeping track of how many points each grade earns. The teachers won the game this week totaling their points to four, freshmen have two points, sophomores two points, juniors two and so far the seniors haven’t scored any.
Overall, Maverick Leadership has worked so hard to recognize and honor those who have suffered or those who have seen others suffer from Breast Cancer, and each year Leadership is finding new ways to make the pep rallies more fun and interactive while still trying to bring awareness.
