Fall season comes to an end

The varsity tennis team is playing their final match of the season against Reedy High School on Wednesday, October 27. The fall tennis season began mid-August and has developed in skill and team camaraderie.

“We’re playing against some of the best teams in the area,” head coach Stephen Maupin said. “That’s just going to make us better. So far I’ve seen steady improvement each and every match.”

With only freshmen and sophomores on the varsity team, they have been playing in junior varsity matches throughout the district. The team has overall competed well, having several close matches this season.

“We played a really tough Liberty and Centennial team and had really close losses,” Coach Maupin said. “A few things here and there could have turned them in our favor.”

The match against Reedy next week will be the team’s final match before they enter their off-season. It will be the ninth total match they play this fall.

“I’m so excited for Reedy, it’s going to be great,” assistant coach Marissa Latham said. “I see a lot of close points that we’re able to win which is a huge improvement from the very first match.”

On October 6 the team played their first tournament at Coppell, with every player medaling and the team placing overall second.

“I loved the Coppell tournament,” Coach Latham said. “We did really well, and I felt like everyone had a lot of confidence going in.”

The team will continue to train through the winter to prepare for the spring season, in which they will be competing in a mix of 4A, 5A, and 6A varsity tournaments.

“I’m very optimistic about the spring season,” Coach Maupin said. “I’m looking for us to be successful at district, make it out to regionals, and see how far we can get out there.”

Coaches and players fondly look back on the past two months and are excited to continue building a strong team.

“Getting to start a program from the ground up, and seeing the excitement that the kids have has been really neat,” Coach Maupin said. “It’s really special to be able to help them improve themselves and achieve something they thought they couldn’t.”
