UK Prime Minister resigns after 9 months in office
U.K Prime Minister Liz Truss resigns from office after 45 days due to a failed economic plan making Rishi Sunak the next Prime Minister of the U.K.
Liz Truss has now become the shortest-serving Prime Minister of the U.K.
“Without any warning, Liz Truss’ financial minister Kwasi Kwarteng promised to slash taxes for the highest earners and biggest corporations – with no plans to pay for it,” The Washington Post said. “Almost immediately, the British pound’s valuation tanked.”
At this time, inflation was already unbelievably high, making it that much harder for the U.K’s working class to pay for everyday expenses.
“The UK economy is facing a recession by the end of this year, with virtually no economic growth predicted until 2024,” The Conversation said. “This will hit public services like health, education, and policing, which are already strained by tight government finances.”
Even before Truss put her financial plan in motion, her resignation was anticipated by many.
“As Truss’s credibility crumbled, British newspaper columns poked fun at her, predicting that her career would have “the shelf-life of a lettuce,” which is about ten days,” The Washington Post said. “One tabloid, the Daily Star, went a step further, setting up a 24-hour live video of a head of lettuce next to a picture of Truss, asking viewers who would wilt first.”
With Truss now out of office, former finance minister Rishi Sunak will be the next Prime Minister of the U.K.
“In his first public statement after the results were announced, Sunak said the country faces a ‘profound economic challenge,’” NBC News said. “He went on to pledge to work for ‘stability and unity’ and added that he would make it his ‘utmost priority’ to unite the party and the country.”
