As the Emerson girls varsity basketball team season has officially started, playoffs will be approaching before they know it. Jazmine Moore,11, is stepping up on and off the court with leadership and skills like bringing energy during practice, checking in on her teammates and holding her teammates accountable to play a crucial role in driving the team’s success.
With the season starting, the team has been putting in the work both on and off the court. Moore emphasizes how the team’s preparation has gone beyond just physical training.

“We prepared by working on conditioning. We’ve focused on team bonding this year. We practice how we are going to play, which is our mindset this year, practice how you wanna play,” Moore said.
Stepping into her junior season, Moore knows her influence on the team in and out of basketball will shape the team’s success. Her leadership is more than just about calling plays; it’s keeping her team connected.
“Since I’m a captain, obviously I have to bring something different to the team this year. I need to make sure my team stays together instead of doing our own thing and making sure we all play as a team rather than individually,” Moore said.
Jazmine’s sister, Italia Moore,9, also plays with her on varsity this year. The natural bond between the Moore sisters has translated seamlessly on the court, which doesn’t just make for great memories but brings more of a spark to the team’s chemistry. Their connection helps set the tone that the Emerson girls play united, competitive and full of energy.
“Honestly, playing with Jazzy this year has been really special actually. Growing up we’ve always played basketball together but this year actually being on a team together makes it more memorable and cool. Not everyone gets to play on the court with their sister and we already have that natural bond,” Italia Moore said.
Jazmine’s ability to hold her teammates accountable reflects the many ways she’s grown as both a player and a captain. As she steps deeper into her leadership role, her commitment to pushing the people around her has become a great reminder that everyone on the team plays a part.
“One thing about Jazzy is that she holds people accountable, even me. If I’m slacking she’ll call me out but it’s because she cares and wants to see our team win. I feel like that plays a big part in the team because it makes everyone want to work harder,” Italia Moore said.
With season unfolding everyday, Jazmine Moore’s leadership continues to shape the Emerson girls varsity basketball team. Her energy, accountability and bond with her teammates, especially her sister highlights the importance of playing together and supporting each other.
