On Wednesday, Dec. 3, Coach Eric Smith and his Marketing Class hosted a CTE fair for Emerson’s feeder school, Scoggins Middle School, to give the rising freshmen a better understanding of the courses available at Emerson. The fair was filled with lots of information and a growing excitement for the future.
Almost all of the CTE courses, as well as Incubator and Accelerator businesses were represented at the fair. The middle school students responded very well to seeing the diverse classes and clubs offered at Emerson High School. The variety among presentations, in appearance and in contents, ensured that each student would be interested and excited in the fair.
“I think that the variety of things that we have available, the Scoggins Middle School kids are really feeding off of that,” Smith said.

The marketing students at Emerson were tasked with creating presentations for a CTE course. Some of these students had no prior knowledge in the class that they were promoting, so they had to do some research to successfully market their assigned class. Reese Yan, 9, was excited by this opportunity; she was assigned with Culinary Arts, a class she was interested in, and combined that interest with her marketing skills to make an eye-catching presentation for the fair.
“I always wanted to do Culinary Arts…, so it was kind of fun representing it and getting to know it more,” Yan said.
Marketing students used the unique experience that CTE classes offer as a selling point to take the class. CTE classes differ from traditional courses as they are more career and future-oriented. Smith understands the importance of traditional courses, but urges students to take a CTE course in order to be set up for success after graduation.
“And it turns out that a CTE course is not just an elective,” Smith said. “It is a course that is actually going to prepare you for the real world.”
The CTE Course Fair gave Scoggins students a preview of some of the opportunities waiting for them at Emerson and gave marketing students some experience in promoting.
