Emerson is taking on a new approach to campus cleanliness with Adopt-a-Power Hour. This initiative, first created by Emerson administration and now managed by National Honor Society Sponsor Zoe Rumpff, allows school organizations to “adopt” a Power Hour and help clean up throughout the period. With this new opportunity, Emerson students can begin to feel more pride in their school.
Several organizations have already successfully adopted a Power Hour, including band, softball, football and National Honor Society. Sponsors and coaches are able to find the sign-up in the staff newsletter, ensuring a simple process and more participation.
“The process is quite easy,” Rumpff said.
Adopt-a-Power Hour was created to have a lasting impact on Emerson’s conduct; this initiative emphasizes the importance of shared responsibility in a community. By participating in clean-up efforts, Emerson students may become more mindful of their actions during lunch and more appreciative of the work done by custodial staff. This is meant to be a building block for future behavior and cleanliness during Power Hour.
“This should help students keep their areas clean during lunch as it should help create empathy for those who have to clean up their messes,” Rumpff said.
This opportunity intends to have a meaningful impact on those who volunteer as well as benefit the school as a whole. Participating organizations are able to help their school directly, allowing them to feel proud of the difference they are making. Adopt-a-Power Hour promotes teamwork, responsibility and a sense of accomplishment in the school.
“Students should feel proud,” Rumpff said. “They are serving their community in a positive and direct way.”
Although Adopt-a-Power Hour is currently dependent on coaches and sponsors to volunteer, there are plans to expand participation in the future. Some logistics, like the sign-up process, may change next year to encourage more students to take part in this opportunity.
“Right now, we are just having sponsors and coaches sign up. Next year, we may tweak and change some practices in order to gain more participation,” Rumpff said.
Adopt-a-Power Hour is an impactful initiative created to support school cleanliness and pride. If you’re interested in this opportunity, remind your coach or club sponsor to check the newsletter and sign you up!
