From Monday, Jan. 26 to Thursday, Jan. 29, school was cancelled in Frisco ISD because of the bad weather. While built-in instructional time accounted for the first two days, the district is applying for waivers to have the last two exempt from the state’s educational time requirements. All club and extracurricular activities were cancelled, and the break gave students time to enjoy the weather.
If the state of Texas grants Frisco ISD the waiver, then the bad weather make-up days on April 6 and 30 will not be utilized, and will be days off. Otherwise, schools will be open on those days.
“I believe we should still have our bad weather make-up days just because this might not be the only winter storm we experience,” Sheikh Faiyaz Ali, 12, said. “The entirety of February is still open.”
Students weren’t just saved from their classes. The impromptu break cancelled all extracurricular events, relieving students who felt unprepared and under pressure.
“I had a lot of rehearsals for an orchestra concert… that got delayed. Additionally, I’m part of a program called [Independent Study and Mentorship], and our [project] showcase got postponed,” Minseong Kim, 12m said. “It makes my life a lot easier now and I get to put my best foot forward. I didn’t really feel we were ready [for] ISM or as … an orchestra.”
Unfortunately, the vacation came at the cost of rough weather conditions.
“None of the roads were paved, all the snow was very icy. … Just trying to leave the area and neighborhood was fairly difficult with the amount of ice buildup, so we really had to bunker down for the few snow days,” Kim said.
On the bright side, the conditions also offered the students some unique ways to have fun and enjoy their days off.
“One of the days, I went sledding with some of my friends,” Ali said. “We were using the hilly part of our neighborhood … We had a lot of fun on that day because we were slipping and sliding all over the place.”
