The gym lights went out on Feb. 6 during the blackout pep rally to celebrate and feature winter sports. This was accompanied by performances from cheer, Majestics, Dream Krew, the band’s trombone section and a game of “Snatch the Wig.”
The winter sports teams basketball, soccer and wrestling, were celebrated, although the wrestling team wasn’t present due to a competition taking place at the same time.
“It was nice to be able to run out with my team and have support from our fellow classmates that we can carry out to our games,” soccer player Jaeli Jeffrey, 11, said.
After cheer’s performance, the trombone section performed headchoppers, a complex series of moves where students stand in a line and alternate bending down and standing up. While the person next to them is down, they swing their trombone over them, making it especially difficult since with the wrong timing, someone could hit the person next to them.
“Headchoppers is an exclusive routine using the trombone that cannot be done with any other instrument in band,” Head Drum Major Bella Kong, 12, said. “It [is] very unique that certain sections of the band had their own feature, as we usually perform altogether in pep rallies.”
The band also changed their usual pep rally strategy since they couldn’t read their music in the dark setting of the gym.
“The blackout pep rally was a new experience for the band as we had to play stand tunes memorized,” Kong said.
The spirit and energy was strong throughout this blackout pep rally. Carry the spirit throughout the season to support the winter sports!
