Feathered hats, green lights and 1920’s American charm. The “Gatsby Gala” created a unique prom experience centered around the 20th century novel. Leadership put on an impressive display, immersing students with decor that was complimented by good food, photos and a fun night full of dancing.
Venue
First and foremost was the venue. The Cotton Mill’s outwards rustic and vintage appearance was the perfect host for a 1920’s-era themed party. The blackened windows and brick walls evoked every historic image of factories and bootlegger houses that we’ve seen in history classes or movies and shows, the image of the Gatsby-era being the first thought in people’s minds before even stepping onto the dance floor.
Decor & Main Dance
Walking up to the Cotton Mill doors, students were met with a picturesque photo spot in front of a quaint, stone fountain. Stepping in only took them deeper into the illusion. A polished hardwood floor and matching wooden pillars, candle chandeliers, feathered decorations and elegant drapings across the ceiling all sold the classic American feel.

Most of the action was happening in the main dance crowd, surrounding the DJ near the back of the main hall. Dancing was going strong the entire night, and it felt amazing walking into the crowd and getting absorbed into the energy. One minute, everyone tried forming a giant short-lived conga line, and later on the entire hall collectively did the “YMCA.” The party spirit was incredibly contagious, inviting anyone who walked in to hit the dance floor.
Food
Aside from the main dance and decor, refreshments were set up. In addition to water and soda, there was a donuts and ice cream bar complete with customizable toppings. The snacks were great, fresh and sweet without being too filling or messy, but didn’t have as much variety as last year’s with mac-n-cheese balls and other savory elements. Still, the bite-sized sweets were a good choice after a night of heavy prom dinners and lots of moving around. A section of candle-lit tables was set aside for mid-dance snackers and anyone looking to sit down and take a break.
Photos
In addition to the aforementioned outdoor fountain, there were also photo stations inside: One with a feathered wall backdrop, and another with flashy, 1920s themed props. Getting to hold goofy paper moustaches up to our eyes and wear old bowler hats while huddling with friends to commemorate the night was a great addition to the spirited celebration.

These additions kept the night fun and broke up the routine of just jumping to the music. Taking time away from the main dance to be able to enjoy a quick snack or capture memories kept the night interesting, mixing excitement with more sincere moments to really slow down and enjoy the people around us.
Prom was a night to remember. The effort put into photo spots, decorations and a great night were all very evident. Leadership promised us a Gatsby themed party, and they delivered. Jumping in crowds, taking pictures with our favourite people and enjoying ourselves for one last dance between the music and lights made the night truly memorable for seniors concluding their high school journeys.
