Why is studying so hard?! Well, the problem can really be how you’re studying. Each person has their own way of studying, but most people aren’t actually taught how to study. There are multiple ways to study and each way can help in a different way. Here is a list of five study methods and what subject it works best with.
Pomodoro
Pomodoro is the most well known study method. It’s a process where you work for a certain amount of time, then take a break smaller and proportionate to the length of time studied for. For example if you study for 40 minutes you would take a 10 minute break. This method is best for English, history or any subject that has a heavy set of reading. It can help students stay focused, but also reminds them that there is a break coming soon as well as preventing burnout.
Brain dumping
Brain dumping is a method where you review your notes or textbook. then you put everything away and try to write down everything that you remember. After writing everything down, you go back to your notes and see how much you remember and what you need to go back and study. This method is best for any science, math and health classes. It helps give you your own freedom to write everything down, but to also go back and double check.
Active recall
Active recall is one of the simplest methods. You simply say out loud everything you’re trying to remember. This method is best for presentations, speeches and vocab. This is also a method that you don’t have to do sitting down so it helps give you the freedom to move while you study.
Feynman technique
Feynman technique is the most humorous way, in my opinion, to study. In this method you teach, or pretend to teach, whatever you are trying to understand in a way that someone who doesn’t know anything about your subject understands it. This method is best for memorisation or complex topics.
The Candle Method
The Candle Method is a study method that actually started on social media. The idea is that you study until the candle burns out. People also take their own ideas for it like having ice melt or stopping when a playlist ends. This method is best to keep on task or getting a big amount of work done.
Finding the best way to study and the right way to study can immensely help with grades and understanding of the subject. It’s important to try multiple methods and find which one work best for you.
